Germany's Einkommensteuer scale for 2026 (section 32a)
Germany defines the tax by formula rather than a bracket table: nothing is due up to the €12,348 basic allowance, then the marginal rate rises smoothly from 14% to 42% before settling at 42% and 45%.
The table gives the marginal rate at the start and end of each zone, derived from the coefficients in the law.
| Taxable income | Marginal rate |
|---|---|
| up to €12,348 | 0% |
| €12,349–€17,799 | 14% → 23.97% |
| €17,800–€69,878 | 23.97% → 42% |
| €69,879–€277,825 | 42% |
| over €277,825 | 45% |
Solidarity surcharge and standard allowances
The solidarity surcharge is 5.5% of the income tax, but only once the income tax exceeds €20,350; above that it phases in, capped at 11.9% of the excess.
A standard €1,266 is deducted from every employee's pay (the employee lump sum plus the special-expenses lump sum).
Employee social insurance in 2026
21.15% of gross pay in all, each branch up to its own ceiling. The calculator deducts it from take-home pay but not from taxable income.
| Branch | Employee share | Annual ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Pension insurance | 9.3% | €101,400 |
| Unemployment insurance | 1.3% | €101,400 |
| Health insurance | 8.75% | €69,750 |
| Long-term care insurance | 1.8% | €69,750 |
